AFTER just three years in the classroom, Julie Hughes is being recognised as a finalist in the 2019 WA Education Awards.

The Ashdale Secondary College science teacher is one of four nominees for WA Beginning Teacher of the Year.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with previous winners and look up to them, so to be nominated was a very humbling experience,” Ms Hughes said.

“I’ve been a science teacher at Ashdale for three years and am very involved in the school’s Stem (science, technology, engineering, maths) and sustainability programs.

“I love the different personalities and energy that each of my students bring to my classes.

“Witnessing those lightbulb moments, and also those not-so-bright moments, fuel me to keep sparking their curiosity of science and learning.”

Ms Hughes has been nominated alongside Shenton College’s Dion Alfonsi, Tasmin Drummond, of Vasse Primary School, and Belmont City College’s Kieron Alford.

“I wouldn’t have experienced my success if it was not for the never-wavering support of my colleagues, leaders, mentor and husband, so a big thank you to you all,” she said.

Before teaching at the Darch school, Ms Hughes worked in the electrical industry teaching students across WA how to stay safe around Horizon and Western Power’s network.
