IN his opening address at the launch of the WA Cancer Council's 2014 Relay for Life Joondalup Wanneroo on Saturday at Arena Joondalup, Relay co-chairman Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard warned it would rain; and rain it did.

Despite hours of non-stop rain Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, accompanied by a few gusty winds, thunder claps and lightning flashes, nothing could dampen the spirits of the 85 teams taking part in the 24-hour Cancer Council fundraiser.

In fact, a record $350,000 was raised in the lead-up and during the overnight event, with still more funds expected to filter in over the next few days.

The seven-year life of the Joondalup Wanneroo relay has now raised more than $2 million for the Cancer Council.

Cancer Council Relay for Life co-ordinator Steven McKiernan said every cent would be spent wisely on support programs and research for the best treatment and care of WA cancer sufferers.
