SKATE boarding, BMX and scooter competitions form part of the free community event to officially open Wanneroo Skate Park.

Wanneroo Youth Centre is hosting the January 13 celebration, which also includes face painting, a photography competition, arts and crafts, game vault and information stalls.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said local youths were involved in organising the day.

“The City’s Youth Team has empowered a group of local young people between 12 and 25 who have been heavily involved in all aspects of planning the event,” she said.

“This encourages them to take pride in the park, and they are also helping to deliver an event they are responsible for.”

The skate park, which opened last August, has been designed for all ages, abilities and types of skates, scooters and BMX bikes.

It features a 7-10ft deep bowl, street section, flat rail and quarter pipe, bank with kerb and plenty of open and flat concrete.

The event will run on Friday from 3.30pm to 8pm at the corner of Ariti Avenue and Wanneroo Road.
