“They managed to get the driver out and St John’s are treating him at the scene,” the spokesman said.

Channel 7 is reporting he was freed from the burning vehicle by a passer-by.

Police also confirmed it was not a police chase after a caller to 6PR this morning thought it had been.

Caller Eric said he had driven past the scene of the fire while taking his daughter to school.

“I spoke to the teachers later; there’s been a high speed chase,” he said.

“He’s landed in someone’s backyard.

“He’s just made it out of the car, the car’s caught on fire.

“There’s two fire trucks, two ambulances and a lot of police here.”
