Girrawheen park shade sail funds to be used at Landsdale playground instead

Laura PondWanneroo Times

MONEY allocated for the provision of shade sails at a Girrawheen park has been transferred for use at a playground in Landsdale.

Councillor Domenic Zappa presented a motion on notice at the October 11 council meeting seeking support for the proposal, which will install shade sails at the recently built nature playground at Warradale Park.

The $27,000 expected cost will be reallocated from Blackmore Park, which was listed to receive shelter under the City’s Park Shade Structure Program for 2016-17 but will now be deferred to the next financial year.

Cr Zappa said playground users made him aware there was a lack of shade at the playground, which would affect its use in summer. “Once a project is commissioned you notice certain gaps not identified in the initial scoping stage; this is one of them,” he said.

The motion was seconded by Cr Brett Treby, who said it was a “sensible approach”.

“This isn’t a normal park, it’s an area for respite for parents of children with autism.”

Cr Lara Simpkins questioned the impact on Blackmore Park and whether the City knew how many children used it.

Community and place acting director Noelene Jennings took the question on notice.

The motion was passed unanimously.
