The Year 8 Duncraig Senior High School student has been writing since she was 11 when a poem she wrote for her primary school’s Anzac Day ceremony was entered by her teacher in the WA Young Writer’s Competition, gaining fourth place.

Since then she has continued writing poetry and short stories, publishing them on her blog.

‘One of my favourite things about writing fiction is the ability to create life with only pen and ink, to transfer the boundless power of your imagination onto paper,’ she said.

‘You may create a fantasy world detached from everyday life, or one based on the landscape of your own dreams.’

Grainne, whose favourite genre is fantasy, named George R.R Martin and Terry Pratchett as her main influences.

‘I plan to study literature in university, before becoming either a full or part-time author,’ she said. To read her work, visit grainne2000.wordpress.com.
