The Simpson Prize is a national essay competition for Year 9 and 10 students, with winners from each state awarded a trip to a battlefield where Anzac soldiers served.

This year students were asked to write an essay about how historical documents give a first-hand insight into the growth of the Anzac legend.

Bryce, whose great-grandfather served in France during World War I, said he hoped standing on the hallowed ground would give him an insight into what the Diggers endured.

‘I think it will help my understanding of the history of the Anzacs,’ he said.
