Hospital targets water bottles

The reminder follows a change from water jugs to bottled water.

A reader who asked to remain anonymous complained that ‘hundreds if not thousands’ of empty plastic bottles were going into rubbish daily.

‘The hospital must put recycling measures in place for these plastic bottles, which are labelled with the ‘recycle please’ logo and ‘reduce our carbon footprint’,’ she said.

‘There is no justification for not recycling.’

A health campus spokesman said all patients received free bottled water during their stay in the interests of hygiene.

There were recycling bins on wards however, as nurses were generally busy with patients, patients were asked to leave empty bottles on meal trays for recycling.

‘Tray stickers routinely advise patients to leave bottles on meal trays for recycling,’ he said.

‘We are now placing stickers on all trays.’
