Illegal workers detained

A spokesman for Immigration and Border Protection Assistant Minister Michaelia Cash said an immigration compliance operation took place at two horticultural properties on October 9.

‘Two unlawful non-citizens of Malaysian nationality were detained and have been transferred to the Perth Immigration Detention Centre, pending removal from Australia at the earliest opportunity,’ he said.

Employers can be fined or prosecuted if they employ, refer or contract non-citizens who do not have a valid visa.

Businesses convicted of allowing or referring an illegal worker to work face fines of up to $20,400 and two years’ imprisonment.
