Wanneroo City Council recommends roundabout for “dangerous” Marangaroo junction

Laura PondWanneroo Times

A ROUNDABOUT has been proposed for a “dangerous” Marangaroo junction.

City of Wanneroo officers had investigated options to improve safety at the Highclere Boulevard and Hepburn Avenue T-intersection, recommending relocating the right-turn slip lane to give motorists a better view of traffic.

But councillors passed an alternative motion at last week’s meeting, requesting a detailed design and cost estimate be prepared for a roundabout, with a report provided by December.

Cr Denis Hayden said the junction had been a concern of his since being elected to council in 2011.

“During this time I’ve seen some horrific situations occur at that intersection,” he said.

“I think we should be considering community safety and road users’ safety.”

Cr Hugh Nguyen agreed the focus should be about road safety rather than costs.

“There’s no reason we should not be looking at having a roundabout at this intersection,” he said.

“It comes down to money but life and limbs are worth more than money in the long run.”
