Jean hailed from Yorkshire in the UK and she came to Perth when the City of Fremantle ‘sponsored me to be the children’s librarian at Fremantle’.
‘And then I met an Australian and that was it,’ she told the Times, which also celebrates its 40th this year.
‘It was a working holiday; I was going to Canada… but never got there.’
Duncraig Library was administered under the then Shire, and later City, of Wanneroo. And Jean rose to be the city librarian.
‘I retired 22 years ago,’ she said. ‘I was the first branch librarian of Girrawheen and then I came to Duncraig for a year before Whitford opened and I was the first branch librarian at Whitford. And I then became city librarian’
