Joondalup Martial Arts student figh for child safety

JOONDALUP Martial Arts students are fighting for child safety.

As part of their recent grading syllabus, students collected more than 80 backpacks and items to donate to the Constable Care Child Safety Foundation’s Comfort Packs program.

A Comfort Pack is a child’s backpack filled with essential items such as pyjamas, underwear, toiletries and activity books that provide personal care and comfort while away from home.

They are distributed to children who are victims of abuse or neglect or are involved in traumatic situations such as road accidents or bushfires.

“The students usually have to complete activities that demonstrate random acts of kindness, saving the environment and working with the community as part of their journey to black belt,” JMA co-owner Sam Moland said.

“This time, JMA member Sian Yates suggested supporting Constable Care to teach the students to look outside their own comfort zone and reach out to others who may need it more.”

Mr Moland said he was proud of the students’ contributions and how excited they were for the project.

“The students really jumped on board with this project and thought about how they would feel in one of these devastating situations,” he said.

“It was really heart-warming to see the effort they all put in for such a needed and caring cause.”

Constable Care visited the club last month to collect the donations and learn some self-defence techniques.

Mr Moland said because the project went so well, the students will now choose a charity to support for each grading cycle.
