KEEP Australia Beautiful WA is looking for volunteers to help pick up freeway litter during road closures this Sunday.

More than 80 volunteers are expected to get involved in the Great Freeway Clean-Up on the Mitchell and Kwinana freeways on April 4.

“Freeway on and off ramps have long been popular spots for people to throw litter from their cars,” chairman Michael Aspinall said.

“Unfortunately, some people throw rubbish from their car windows while waiting for the lights to change.

“Although these items are generally small, they build up over time – that’s why we’re targeting these areas.”

The Great Freeway Clean-up will coincide with the Freeway Bike Hike, a cycling event that will close the southbound lanes of the freeways from Burns Beach Road in the north to Thomas Road in the south.

Clean-up times will be from 8–10am at the on and off ramps for Hepburn Avenue, Cedric Street, Manning Road and South Street.

Volunteers will be given bags, gloves, clean-up equipment and light refreshments.
