Kingsway sports complex granted security funding

A MADELEY facility “notorious” for attracting hooning and anti-social behaviour has received a security boost from the Federal Government.

The City of Wanneroo has been granted $207,700 to install 12 CCTV cameras at Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex and upgrade software. It had applied for $187,000 to build a communications tower in Wangara to provide a network link to the City’s control room but this was not supported.

A City report said it wanted to take a proactive approach to preventing crime and antisocial behaviour in the area, which it anticipated to grow along with population.

“This project will address both current and future needs helping to create safe family friendly play and social environment,” it said.

Councillor Domenic Zappa told the chamber at the September 13 meeting that the grant was much needed. “Kingsway is a particular hot spot for antisocial behaviour and crime… and the carparks surrounding it are notorious for hoons,” he said.

“I’m keen to see that the technology being installed is of a standard police can work with council to prosecute these hoons.”

Cr Brett Treby attributed the negative activity to the facility’s size.

“Because of the size and scale of Kingsway it makes the necessity for CCTV cameras all the more important,” he said.

The project will be included within the City’s 2016-17 20-year capital works program.
