Koondoola: Mercy College PaMaChi group donates gifts to Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren

Staff WriterWanneroo Times

CHRISTMAS came early for a group of grandparents when students from Mercy College in Koondoola delivered more than $6000 worth of presents.

The delivery to the Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren WA group included 22 bikes, 44 gift vouchers and more than 50 toys.

Members of the group, many of whom are in their 70s and 80s, are raising their grandchildren, with little or no financial support.

Mercy College students established a group called PaMaChi in 2015 as part of the Christian service learning program to support the grandparents in financial and practical ways.

It has run events such as yoga sessions for grandparents and homework or art classes for grandchildren after school as well as Easter egg hunts and picnics.

This year, with the support of VITA Foundation, the group made its annual Christmas party bigger and helped more than 60 families.

“Seeing tears in the eyes of our students when they are handing out bikes and the tears in the eyes of the grandparents receiving them reminds us that the act of kindness can really change someone’s world,” Christian service coordinator Karen Wilson said.
