About 750 people attended the December/January swimming classes, with between 800 and 900 expected for the second round beginning on Monday.

Although Vacswim enrolments have closed, in-term swimming lesson enrolments are open for February.

‘We strongly encourage those people who are new to Australia to enrol their kids and let our team make sure they have the skills to be safe around water,’ Mr Partridge said.

Mr Partridge said 23 per cent of City of Joondalup residents settled in the last five years.

‘We are very aware of the fact that many newcomers to Australia do not have the swim skills most Australians take for granted.

‘The most at-risk groups are children who are often inquisitive and sometimes a bit fearless.’

He said lessons are available for babies from six months of age up to adults, and attendees do not need any swimming experience.
