Loss of teachers to be discussed

In a letter to Premier Colin Barnett, the Joint Board Chairs North Metropolitan Secondary Schools Group outlined a number of issues.

These included the loss of about 600 full-time equivalent teachers, a reduction of course offerings, a reduction in literacy and numeracy support, and the loss of year co-ordinators and year leaders.

The letter described 2015 as a critical year with the transition of Year 7 students into secondary school and the introduction of the new WACE.

‘The public system will have more students in 2014 and the same number of teachers,’ the letter said. ‘This will significantly disadvantage every one of our schools.’

The minister invited the school representatives to meet him on December 17. In response to claims Year 7 inclusions would cause strain, Mr Collier said schools needing additional accommodation would receive it.

‘Planning for Year 7 transition into secondary in 2015 is under way with $229.6m for capital works across 29 schools,’ he said.
