The Hamersley resident received an inaugural citation of appreciation at the U3A (UWA) annual general meeting on April 13 for ‘exemplary service to his region, U3A (UWA) Council and U3A networks’.

A former teacher and secondary school principal, Mr Flanigan served as U3A (UWA) president and in various roles for his local region, U3A North Coast, which meets at Ellersdale Park clubrooms in Warwick.

He is inaugural president of the U3A Network WA and sits on the National Alliance of Australian U3As.

‘I joined U3A when I retired from teaching in 1999,’ he said.

‘It’s a great organisation which has spread all over the world in the last 30 years.

‘With the huge increase in the number of retirees in the community, it provides an important outlet for all those who want to keep their minds active.

‘There are no entrance qualifications and no exams.

‘All you need is a desire to keep learning in company with other like-minded people.’

Mr Flanigan is also a prolific playwright, with many of his works debuting at Innaloo’s Stirling Theatre.
