A NORTHERN suburbs chef had his biggest birthday celebration this month as several local clubs took home awards at the 2016 Clubs WA Awards for Excellence.

Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club topped the list, named WA large club of the year for the second year in a row, as well as winning the best large club function facility category.

Club head chef Timothy White won the employee of the year cat-|egory – a timely reward as he heads |towards semi-retirement this year after almost 17 years working in the club’s kitchen.

“You put your heart and soul into it and it’s great to get some appreciation,” he said.

Mr White said the June 11 awards night also coincided with his 64th birthday, and having the crowd of about 500 people sing “Happy birthday” at the function “made an old man smile”.

The Nollamara resident said during the busier summer months, the kitchen could provide meals for a couple of thousand people a week.

“It’s a fantastic place to work – we are right on the beach,” he said.

“I come in every morning and I look out on that vista – it’s just beautiful.”

The chef said he would retire next month but return later in the year to work part-time for Nigel Sweeney who would replace him as head chef. He praised club manager Robert Weir for his leadership ability that helped MAAC earn the club of the year title again.

Sorrento Bowling Club won the medium club of the year award, and Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club won the best medium club members’ event category. In the amateur sports team of the year award, Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club’s rescue and resuscitation team was the winner.

Guilderton Country Club won the best small club function facility award.
