McGowan and WA Labor back MacTiernan to replace retiring MLC Travers

Laura PondWanneroo Times

STATE Labor leader Mark McGowan says he will back former WA and federal MP Alannah MacTiernan to replace retiring North Metropolitan MLC Ken Travers.

He said Ms MacTiernan was a “fitting replacement”, though she would have to secure pre-selection from the party.

“My view is very, very strong that Alannah should fill this position,” he said.

“Alannah is a person of great ability; she’s a contributor, she’s a worker, she has care and compassion for West Australians.”

Ms McTiernan said she was honoured to be invited to nominate for the vacancy.

“Mark obviously believes that I can add some value (and) I think that I have got something to give here,” she said.

Calling Mr Travers a “powerhouse”, she said his abilities would be missed in the Upper House.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to put my hand up to step into that gap,” she said.

“I’ve been out there campaigning with my colleagues since I retired from Federal Parliament now I have an opportunity to do it with even greater engagement.”
