Meet the Darch woman who’s bringing kindness back

Greig JohnstonWanneroo Times

DARCH woman Naomi Lambert has turned her own heartbreak into a movement spreading kindness and positive energy throughout the world.

In 2015 she had a hysterectomy at age 33, destroying her dream of having children.

“For a good couple of years I was pretty angry about it and became quite reclusive,” Naomi said.

“It was a really tough couple of years.”

Slowly the light began to creep back in, and Naomi began to look for a way to put something positive out into the world.

“I was out at the shops one day and I saw a teenager bowl over a lady and he didn’t stop,” she said.

“I was like ‘that’s not how it should be – why can’t people just take the time’.”

‘The Cool to Be Kind’ Project was born.

Naomi designed a series of ‘kindness cards’, hiding them in places around Perth, encouraging people to undertake a random act of kindness in the lead-up to Christmas 2017.

“On the back of them I had a list of ideas, things that people could do, ranging from saying hello to 10 people or leaving something for the postman in the letterbox,” she said.

“I started to hide them – in Coles magazines, when I flew to Adelaide I put some on the plane, in public toilets.

“I got 32 responses back, which was a pretty good strike rate.”

The stories she received from people were astonishing.

One man who found one of the cards decided to take the homeless man he always greeted to lunch at a five-star restaurant.

A shop owner helped a dear customer plant a rose in memory of his late wife.

A lady, dying from cancer, believed she needed perspective and volunteered at a homeless shelter.

Naomi’s goal is simple: to touch as many lives as she can.

“It’s not bringing in any money, but it was never about that – it was about the cause,” she said.

“I’ll do whatever I can to keep it going because it’s changing people’s lives and I love that.”
