About 39 students, peer support leaders and staff, including three members of Perth Moyes Anglican Community School in Mindarie, flew out on Tuesday.

Deputy associate principal Nicole Brown and pupils Samantha Webster (Year 10) and Abigail Walrond (Year 12) took dozens of filled pencil cases for needy children donated by their school community.

The group will work with young people from Manila’s local Anglican parishes teaching and befriending children who live in squatter camps alongside rubbish dumps and other poor areas, and providing meals for them.

Peer support leader Abigail could not wait to return after last year’s ‘life-changing, amazing experience,’ which she said made her appreciate life in Australia.

Samantha was looking forward to sampling life without Facebook, the internet or other technology.

Mrs Brown said that while she would be giving time to help Manila’s needy, she would receive much more back from the experience.

The pilgrims will be away for the school holidays and will return home on July 19.
