DARING, desperate and funny, Limelight Theatre’s Moonlight and Magnolias is a Wanneroo stage production that gives a behind-the-scenes look at some of the problems encountered during the filming of Gone With The Wind.

Written by Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Ron Hutchinson and directed by Kingsley resident Carryn McLean, the play is loosely based on the fact that in 1939, Gone With The Wind producer David O. Selznick shut down production after three weeks of filming because he was unhappy with the screenplay.

With his reputation and bank balance on the line, Selznick enlists his friend Ben Hecht as a somewhat reluctant script doctor and possibly the only person in the US not to have read the novel.

New director Victor Fleming (played by Joondalup resident Andrew Govey) is poached from the set of The Wizard of Oz and the three are locked in Selznick’s office with nothing to eat but a stockpile of bananas and peanuts to sustain them.

What follows is a hilarious clash of egos as they try to complete the script within five days with Fleming and Selznick telling the story and acting out the roles and Hecht typing up the screenplay.

Moonlight and Magnolias appealed because it’s about the re-writing of one of the best known movies of all time,” Govey said.

McLean added that once she read the script, she was hooked.

“The humour and issues of the day, such as anti-Semitism and treatment of African-Americans in US history, interested me,” she said.

“These issues are still relevant in the US and other parts of the world and are delivered in a thought-provoking way that does not lecture.

“And, of course, the humour is biting but very funny.”
