More dog restrictions

Dogs will need to be on a leash.

City staff will prepare a proposal to install ‘dogs to be kept on leash’ signs at playground areas and report back to council in September.

Councillor Dot Newton put forward a motion on notice at the March council meeting for the signs.

Her report to council said all public reserves under the management of local government were designated as dog exercise areas under the City of Wanneroo Animals Local Law.

‘This allows the dog owners to bring their dogs to the local parks which also have play equipment areas for children to enjoy,’ the report said.

‘Although a dog is seen as a part of the family, some young children are afraid when a dog runs towards them.

‘It is therefore proposed that signs ‘dogs to be kept on leash, ranger contact number and the fine for non compliance’ be installed in the City’s parks where play equipment areas have been provided.’

She said having dogs on leads would make it easier for owners to see if their dogs had messed in the area.

City staff supported the proposal and noted the need for a new local law with leash requirements as well as a new infringement and appropriate penalty for the failure to have a dog properly secured under the conditions.
