Not-for-profit health group Perth North Metro Medicare Local has recognised a need in the northern suburbs for a comprehensive mental health service that helps with essentials such as employment, income support, housing and education.
From this month, mentally ill residents will have access to one-on-one support through the Partners in Recovery initiative.
Program manager Aoife Stack bemoaned the complexities of navigating the mental health system, saying those most vulnerable often fell through the gaps.
Partners in Recovery aimed to temper the problem.
‘Rather than having to deal with several different agencies, they have one ‘go-to’ person who co-ordinates support services around the individual,’ she said.
‘There are many people who might be receiving one form of help, such as mental health support, but really need a job or a place to live in order to get their life back on track.’
Families could also seek help on behalf of a loved one or doctors could refer patients to the program.
