Motorists slugged in drive to raise funds

The family rebate will halve from $72 to $36. Concession holders such as pensioners will be eligible for the full rebate amount of $36, which will apply to the concessionary registration fee.

The increase is likely to save about $21 million in the 2013-2014 financial year.

Labor Leader Mark McGowan said thousands of motorists receiving licence and third party insurance policy renewals would face ‘an extra hit in their hip pocket’.

Motor vehicle registration and drivers’ licences rose by 5 per cent and compulsory third party insurance by 4.1 per cent from July 1, 2013.

Mr McGowan recently visited Landsdale pensioner James Waddell, who is facing a 75.5 per cent increase, to voice opposition to the discount cut.

‘Pensioners and seniors will be the worst affected, slapped with an increase to their licence fee as high as 75 per cent,’ he said.
