Mums-to-be deliver campaign message

Staff ReporterWanneroo Times

Expectant mums Tara Finch and her friend Kylie Turner joined the campaign by painting their stomachs with the 10 cents-per-container refund message because they want a similar program to that of other states.

Tara remembers as a child taking bags of empty cans to the supermarket and buying lollies with the refund.

‘Cans were valuable,’ she said.

‘Now, wherever I go I see cans and bottles littered, even if there are bins in the immediate vicinity. Not only will putting a cash value on drink containers stop them from ending up in our waterways and oceans, it will give kids a source of pocket money and community groups an easy way to fund raise.’

Every hour wasted sees about 160,000 bottles and cans hit WA landfills, beaches, road verges and public spaces, say campaigners.
