The centre, which works in partnership with Volunteering WA and the City of Joondalup, operates from Joondalup library’s ground floor.
New co-ordinator Alison Whitelaw, who is also Volunteering WA’s volunteer services manager, oversees the centre with the help of several volunteers.
Ms Whitelaw said four years as state manager for the Australian Business and Community Network through which businesses provided mentors for school students had ignited her passion for volunteering.
Help with literacy and numeracy skills and confidence building stayed with the young people for life and ‘planted seeds’ for the future.
Ms Whitelaw has brought her skills to the Joondalup centre, helping link volunteers and voluntary groups and advising on volunteer management.
She said volunteers were the backbone of the community.
‘It is important they know we really appreciate everything they do,’ she said.
‘We also run monthly information sessions for volunteers.’
Joondalup Volunteer Resource Centre is open Tuesdays to Thursdays, 9.30am to 2.30pm (Wednesdays only during school holidays). Call 9400 4734.
