The trip started on Sunday and will see Jason sail for 12 days, visiting the Batavia wreckage site at the Abrolhos.

He will join the crew in taking the helm, assisting with navigation, and hoisting and furling square sails on the yards.

This is not the first time Jason has had the opportunity to sail on a tall ship after he joined the Department of Fire and Emergency Services cadets on the STS Leeuwin II earlier this year.

‘The Leeuwin was a great experience and something I really enjoyed,’ he said.

‘Getting to know new people was my favourite part, and I’m excited to develop this further and expand my experience on the Bark Europa.

‘If people ever get the chance to sail on a tall ship, they should jump at the opportunity because there’s nothing else like it.’

Jason was also involved with the South African Sea Rescue growing up and has applied to join the Australian navy. Bark Europa is one of three Dutch tall ships visiting Fremantle as part of their world voyage following old trade routes of historic times.
