Padbury resident Peter Jovic developed www.swellsup.com with the intention of publishing photographs of surfers, regardless of their skill level.
‘The fact that people are able to view an image of themselves, they can just log on, have a look, they don’t need to subscribe, they just click on a gallery and there might be a photo of them and that’s the real basis of the site,’ he said.
The father of two said he left work in construction safety after becoming disillusioned with it and decided to build a website devoted to local surfers.
‘The east coast websites really cater to people on the eastern seaboard and they didn’t give too much of a fuss about what was going on over here so I thought it was about time that somebody grabbed the bull by the horns and showcased what we have over here.’
Mr Jovic now devotes his time to photographing and developing the website as well as taking care of his children as a stay-at-home dad.
‘There’s all these little surf micro cultures and it’s actually quite amazing and I never knew it existed until I started doing this,’ he said.
Mr Jovic, who’s been surfing for more than 25 years, said he had received a lot of positive feedback about the site.
‘I’ve been talking to a lot of people in the carpark or out on the water and some people say it’s bringing the stoke back in the line-up.’ he said.
‘It’s really reinvigorated me and brought back my passion for surfing.’
