With a 50 per cent increase in car thefts in WA in the past three years to 9000 in 2013, ECU criminologist Natalie Gately will examine the habits of car thieves while raising public awareness of risk factors.
‘We’re hoping to determine behaviour which assists car thieves and hopefully educate the public about what they should be doing to prevent motor vehicle theft,’ Dr Gately said.
‘This knowledge would be the first step in identifying what makes a car or its contents a prime target for thieves.’
National police data showed the majority of cars were stolen from people’s homes.
