Park will close earlier in winter

OPERATING hours at Mirror Park skate park in Ocean Reef will be reduced during the winter months.

The shorter hours will take effect from next Monday, July 7.

As well as recommending that lights be installed, City of Joondalup officers had recommended closing the park later every night ” at 9pm instead of 7pm.

However, Mayor Troy Pickard moved an amendment at last week’s council meeting to close the skate park earlier ” at 5.30pm every night ” between May 1 and September 30.

‘If we’re encouraging people to use it until 7pm but not providing lights for them to do that, we would have a contributory negligence if someone was to hurt themselves skating within the designated time frame at night,’ he said.

‘The reality is by about 5.30pm (in winter) it becomes dark and I think there is a liability issue if we don’t change our position and reduce the hours of use.’

Cr Tom McLean asked if reducing the hours would be enforceable.

‘I wouldn’t expect the City would have a ranger designated there to patrol that but they would keep it on their radar,’ Mr Pickard said.

‘Like most of the rules we have, we’re relying on residents to alert the City to inappropriate use and encourage residents to do likewise if people are skating outside those hours.’

Councillors unanimously voted to reduce the operating hours in the winter months and listed $12,000 in the 2015-16 capital works program for the installation of new signage.
