READ NOWThe phrase “it’s okay to be white” has become associated with the white supremacist movement in the US.
Recently, Pauline Hanson tried to pass a motion in Parliament saying “it’s okay to be white”.
Dr Aly worked as a counter-terrorism professor before she was elected in 2016.
In response to the posters, Dr Aly wrote, “words matter.”
“When our leaders use white supremacist and neo-Nazi slogans in Parliament, and when the Government votes in favour of them, this happens,” she wrote.
“It’s okay to be you, whoever you are; but this racial intimidation and harassment is not okay.”
Many commenters on Facebook have written in support of Dr Aly – calling the people responsible “cowards”, “disgusting” and “un-Australian”.
