PERTH Wildcats vice-captain Greg Hire is helping to encourage more people to become blood donors.

More than 750 first time donors are needed across Perth this month to meet patient needs.

In an effort to find some extra recruits, the Red Cross Blood Service has teamed up with the Perth Wildcats to launch the Blood Substitute video campaign.

As part of the campaign, two players who were unable to donate blood ‘subbed in’ at the workplace of two donors, enabling them to take time off to donate.

The first video features Hire subbing in for a City of Wanneroo ranger.

“Wildcats players couldn’t donate blood during the season due to playing commitments but what we were able to do instead was donate an hour of our time so someone else could roll up their sleeves,” Hire said.

“Blood Substitute gave me an opportunity to try my hand as a City of Wanneroo ranger; searching for an abandoned vehicle and undertaking beach patrol but more importantly I was able to help save three lives.”
