Petition to keep trees

Petition to keep trees

Councillors voted 14-1 at last month’s council meeting to remove the trees after considering a 35-signature petition against them, which some residents said were a potential hazard.

Lockport Approach resident Lisa Shearon started the petition after reading about the council’s decision in the Weekender this month.

‘The decision was made without wider community consultation,’ she said.

‘These 35 signatures do not represent the Madeley community.’

A council report offered three options for the trees ” keep and maintain, remove every second tree or remove all and replace with native species ” with the recommendation that councillors adopt the first option.

‘It is not the City’s practice to remove healthy and structurally sound trees due to berry and leaf drop, and the aesthetic value of the trees should be considered,’ the report said.

‘These trees are historically significant and should be maintained for future generations.’

Ms Shearon said she would like the council to consider option one of the report.

‘I understand the trees are not native and they must be a pain to live across from ” the trees aren’t without their problems,’ Ms Shearon said. ‘I think councillors should consider maintaining them and re-evaluate the situation down the track.’

She said the trees added character to the community otherwise lacking in natural environment.
