At its September 15 meeting, councillors accepted Pindan’s tender of about $3.34 million for the Willespie Drive project.

The council also noted an extra $525,000 would be listed in the 2016-17 capital works budget to complete the works.

Deputy Mayor Dot Newton said giving the community input in the Pearsall facility’s design had been “brilliant”.

“This site is in such an excellent place to build this now everything’s around it,” she said.

“I know it will be well used; apart from the schools there are no meeting places.”

The City advertised for tender submissions from June until August this year.

A report to council said Pindan provided an extensive list of relevant project experiences including community centres, libraries, sporting facilities and multipurpose centres.

Designs for the centre were presented to the council in March with a $500,000 Lotterywest grant for the project approved in May.

It followed a study in 2013 that identified a need for the facility in the area and the suitability of the proposed site.

Development approval has been issued by the City for the building, carpark and landscape works, with Pindan to obtain the necessary permits.
