When inspectors visited the area, the rabbits were already dead.
RSPCA chief executive David van Ooran said nearby residents had claimed it was not the first time live rabbits had been strung up in the area.
‘While rabbits are considered an introduced pest species, there are humane control methods for eradicating rabbits, but some methods of killing them are far from humane such as what is suspected of occurring in this instance,’ Mr van Ooran said.
‘These animals are no different from their domestic counterparts, such as pet dogs or cats, in terms of their capacity to suffer and experience pain and fear.’
Mr van Ooran said people convicted of animal cruelty faced fines of up to $50,000 and five years’ jail.
