Prostate cancer support on hand

A raised Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) count in 2009 resulted in a biopsy, cancer diagnosis and radical prostatectomy.

While on the road to recovery, Barry found attending a Prostate Cancer Foundation support group in Wembley informative and supportive.

When the foundation set up a new group at Beaumaris Community Centre in Ocean Reef, he volunteered to join and is now the convenor.

‘I felt it was my way of doing something positive and to try give back,’ he said.

‘We hope to get more men and women along to our informal monthly meetings, where we can provide a good selection of books, leaflets and other useful information.

‘I believe it is very important that partners, both men and women, attend the meetings as there is so much to learn and understand about this terrible disease that affects so many men every year.’

Ocean Reef Prostate Cancer Support Group meets on Wednesday, March 19, (and every third Wednesday), 7pm to 9pm. Call Barry on 6103 5713 (business hours) or 6201 4653 (after-hours).
