Quinns Men’s Shed launches first workshop

Lucy JarvisWanneroo Times

QUINNS Men’s Shed has a base to meet and work on projects three years after the group formed.

Members gathered at the shed at Gumblossom Community Centre on February 26 to celebrate the launch of the Murray Steel workshop.

Vice president Roger Davies said the facility was named after one of the founding members, because Mr Steel identified the former council shed as a suitable site and his “doggedness” helped them get permission to use it.

President Kim Young said the shed had been empty for about three years, and the City of Wanneroo had helped the group set up its workshop there.

Mr Davies said some members worked on personal projects, making furniture and toys, and the group would do a helicopter project with Bunnings in the lead up to Anzac Day.

He said they had also worked with local charities, and the group had previously made benches for developer Satterley Property Group.

Mr Young said the workshop was open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9am to 2pm.

“On Wednesdays we have a social meeting that runs from 12.30pm to 2.30pm in the Gumblossom Community Centre,” he said.

“Our major goal is to improve the mental health of our members and provide a safe place for our members to meet.”

Mr Young said the group planned to expand its facility to offer more than a workshop because many members “just come to be social”.

“Guys can come and have a chat, play chess if they want to,” Mr Davies said.

The Quinns Men’s Shed, which started in 2017, is open to men of all ages.
