Redevelopment at centre to help disperse undesirables

JOONDALUP Mayor Troy Pickard believes improvements to Ocean Reef Shopping Centre will discourage congregating youths.

‘I recently met with the owners of the shopping centre over concerns about the condition of the site and encouraged them to actively pursue its redevelopment,’ Mr Pickard said.

‘There are a number of tenancy vacancies, which the City would like to see filled.

‘More shops and fewer empty buildings would not only provide for a better shopping experience for locals but would also prove less attractive to those groups that regularly congregate there now.’

Mr Pickard said the City had alerted police about anti-social behaviour and youth outreach workers would monitor the area.

Trees near the (disused) garage restricted the line of sight into the property, limiting passive surveillance and were the owner’s responsibility.

‘A recent inspection of the footpath along Marina Boulevard and Venturi Drive identified two sections of the path slightly raised, possibly by tree roots,’ he said.

‘The City will level these sections of path at the earliest opportunity.’

Mr Pickard said residents should report anti-social behaviour to police on 131 444 or City Watch on 1300 655 860 (24 hours a day/seven days a week).
