Religion, politics go with the territory for Father Tate

The former Tasmanian senator was accustomed to prayer breakfasts as chairman of the Federal Parliamentary Christian Fellowship for many years.

‘In that capacity I helped organise the encircling by various Christian prayer groups of the new Parliament House when it was opened back 25 years ago,’ he said.

‘We hoped to strengthen the Christian dimensions of the deliberations of our leaders in the federal parliament at that time.

‘Perhaps we need to encircle the Australian Electoral Commission at this time,’ he quipped.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard welcomed the 150 guests, including church representatives, community leaders and high school students.

He said that the breakfast was an occasion to pray together and reflect on the importance of being a connected and engaged community.

The breakfast raised more than $1150 for YouthCare, which provides chaplaincy services to schools.
