Residents rally against speed humps

Staff ReporterWanneroo Times

Wanneroo residents signed a 232-signature petition requesting councillors not to adopt the $20,000 traffic management scheme approved at the September council meeting.

The City received 33 submissions on the speed humps ” 26 did not support the humps.

A council report said rubber ‘speed cushions’ would reduce speed in the street but recommended the council withdraw its support based on the community’s response.

Councillors Dot Newton and Dianne Guise supported the original proposal on behalf of Regent Gardens Resort residents who said increased speed and traffic volume had made it difficult for pedestrians to safely cross the road.

‘I gave it my support at the time in good faith because I believed it was a reasonable argument,’ Cr Guise said.

‘Given the strong opposition that the proposal has received… I think it appropriate to reconsider my position and withdraw my support from the original motion.’
