‘Rural jewel’ defended

Staff ReporterWanneroo Times

Wanneroo City Council decided last Tuesday, July 23, not to approve the application lodged by Lime Industries in 2011 for an extractive industry at 90 Nowergup Road, with the use considered discretionary.

Elected members allowed a recommendation to approve the Lime Industries application with 29 conditions to lapse, then supported an alternative motion by councillor Brett Treby to refuse it.

The State Administrative Tribunal had asked the council to make a decision on the application after the company deemed it refused in January and appealed to SAT.

Lime Industries owner Irene Menchetti said the company was disappointed with the decision, and would proceed with its appeal to SAT.

Lake Nowergup/Carabooda Valley Community Group spokeswoman Sabine Winton said they were ‘a tad thrilled’ after three years of lobbying.

‘We now look forward to the administration fully and properly defending the council’s position at full hearing in SAT,’ Ms Winton said.

‘We applaud our council for having the vision and determination to defend this most special rural jewel that is the Lake Nowergup Valley.

‘With over 50 years supply of limestone less than 2km away, small scale mining in the heart of the valley makes no sense at all.’Lucy Jarvis
