After being among the first to discover what would become Perth’s celebrity elephant seal, Tom urged mum Julie to report the sighting to the nearby Department of Fisheries.
“What if he’s sick?” he said.
“What if someone gets bitten?”
Tom was at Sorrento beach before school last Wednesday with his mum and his sister Ciara (7).
People were starting to get too close to the seal for photographs and Julie explained to her children the danger.
She suggested alerting authorities but presuming someone would have done it and conscious of getting to school, she said “we won’t worry”.
“No, mum we should,” Tom implored.
“We drove down to the Fisheries building and reported that there was an elephant seal,” Julie said.
“A lady there said ‘we’ll call someone straight away’.
“He is a concerned little citizen, our Tom.”
