LOCAL cyclists will have a safer and more direct route to and from Perth CBD after the City of Joondalup recently constructed a 500m shared path in Woodvale.

The 4m-wide red asphalt path, which links the Mitchell Freeway shared path along Trailwood Drive to the Whitfords Avenue underpass, also provides a safer route to and from Whitfords train station.

The new path means cyclists can bypass the busy junction at Trailwood and Camarino drives.

The Department of Transport contributed $100,000 to the $200,000 project.

Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard said he would continue to lobby for more funding to improve cycling infrastructure north of the river to help reduce congestion.
