The popular Barridale Lodge resident, who turned 100 on Monday, spent her early years cooking, cleaning and sewing for her parents and siblings, freeing them up to run a large dairy in what is now Semaphore, South Australia.
Mrs Prior met husband Ned through her sister’s boyfriend and helped him in their Peterhead butcher’s shop.
Widowed many years ago, she moved to Perth around 1995 to join their only child, daughter Marilyn and her family.
Mrs Prior has two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
‘Mum came to Perth for holidays before deciding to come and live here with us,’ Marilyn said.
‘She has lived the longest of her brother and three sisters ” her oldest sister reached nearly 90.
‘We kept saying to her ‘you can do this, you can reach 100′.’
Marilyn said her mother played bingo three nights a week until 12 months ago and still enjoyed knitting.
‘Mum has always been a very placid, very happy, very gentle woman,’ she said.
Family came from South Australia to join the birthday celebrations, which included a lunch for residents and a family afternoon tea.
