Shop blaze poses a big problem for firefighters

Fire crews were called to the corner of Whitfords and Marmion avenues just after 6.30am to find the Big W sign ablaze.

Crews from Duncraig, Wangara and Perth Fire Stations extinguished the fire by 8.45am.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the height of the sign made fighting the fire difficult.

‘The sign is 18m tall so they needed the ladder to come from Perth Station before they could get up there,’ she said.

The cause of the fire, which resulted in $40,000 damage, is unknown.

– A fire destroyed a shed at a Buckhaven Court home in Kingsley on Saturday night.

Fire crews were called to the fire just before 6.30pm and had it extinguished by 8.30pm.

The fire caused minor smoke damage to the house.
