Siblings get a kick out of martial art

Ben (13) and Laura (14) Golding won gold at the national karate championships held at the Arena Joondalup this month.

Laura has practised karate for eight years and Ben for four and both have won several State karate competitions.

‘They’ve fallen in love with it in the last couple of years,’ Mark Golding said.

‘They’ve both performed very well locally and it’s warranted their first State team selection this year.’

The Sacred Heart College students and brown belt competitors also won bronze medals in their team events.

‘There are so many positives to karate,’ Mr Golding said.

‘I think it shapes the person they become with the discipline, the circle of friends they build and relationships they establish.

‘The competition side has really attracted him (Ben) to karate and given him something to motivate him.’

Ben competed in the 12 to 13-year-olds under-50kg category and Laura in the 14 to 15-year-old 54kg+ category.
