PERTH’S Spud King is spending the weekend giving away potatoes.

Tony Galati wants to make it an annual event in celebration of the time he challenged potato regulation in WA and won.

The potato rebel got around strict growing and selling rules by handing out free spuds before the industry was finally deregulated this time last year.

“Any grower can grow potatoes, they can grow what varieties they want, they can grow them when they want and sell them to whoever they want,” he told Today Tonight.

“So the market is completely free.”

The Sicilian Aussie plans to give away 100 tonnes on Saturday and the same on Sunday.

It’s a thank you to Perth families for their support – a big thank you he wants to repeat every year.

“Every year in remembrance of winning this war we’re giving away 200 tonnes of spuds while I’m alive,” he said.

There is a 4kg limit per family.

And Tony himself will be handing out balloons to the kids at one of his eight stores.
