State Govt chips in $2m for roundabout realignment on Gnangara Rd

Laura PondWanneroo Times

THE State Government has allocated $2 million for construction of a roundabout at a realigned Gnangara Road in Wangara.

Wanneroo MLA and Local Government Minister Paul Miles said work to create the roundabout at the proposed intersection of Whitfords Avenue and Gnangara and Wanneroo roads was expected to start in mid-2018.

“In the past Gnangara Road had been classified as a major distributor road to the nearby industrial estate, however with significant urban development occurring in the area and the realignment of Ocean Reef Road, the road has now been reclassified as a local road,” he said.

“Nevertheless it is still being used as a major distributor road by numerous trucks, which combined with the increase in urban development has resulted in a very dangerous situation for local commuters.”

Assets director Harminder Singh said it was the City’s responsibility to realign Gnangara Road, which will need to occur before Main Roads constructs the roundabout.

“The City is progressing a number of project actions such as acquisition of land required for Gnangara Road realignment and preparation of design options for interface with (the planned) intersection,” he said.

He said the City had requested more information from Main Roads regarding the status of land acquisition, pre-planning work undertaken and proposed delivery timeline so it could prepare a schedule for the realignment.

“Following the receipt of the requested information, a meeting with Main Roads officers will be arranged to discuss this in more detail,” he said.

“The City will be in a position to provide further details regarding the project costs and construction schedule in due course.”
